France’s radio stations and online
papers have been particularly a-buzz these past few days with programs about
the American presidential election. France Info, for instance, a major news station, is into its third day
of reporting on the election.
Monday and Tuesday were largely
devoted to the American voting system, how the federal system works, American
presidents of the 20th century, lingering notably on Theodore
Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, FDR and Johnson, for the obvious connections between the financial and international situations of their presidencies and Obama’s.
Today, Wednesday November 5, the radios are discussing in detail the large voter turnout,
the American, French and international reaction to the victory, phone calls
made by McCain and Bush to President-elect Obama, and of course Sarkozy’s
position and congratulatory call scheduled for tonight.
“Historic,” “hopeful,” “crushing
victory,” “renewing the American dream” flow from reporters’ pens and lips.
To share the
French reaction to this historic moment, I’ve selected headlines and articles
from three major resources for French news. Two are online newspapers: the
moderate Le Monde and the liberal Libération. The third is Yahoo.fr’s news in French, widely read on a daily basis here in
France by a broad spectrum of French people. These sources give a good
across-the-board feel for what the French are thinking today about the American
people’s choice of Barack Obama.

Paris on November 4-5, beginning at 12:41 (French time) Tuesday November 4 and
concluding at 5:29 (French time) on Wednesday November 5. I found the
international spins on President-elect Obama’s victory quite worthy of note.

grands électeurs (il devait en obtenir 270) contre 163 à John McCain. Au Sénat,
